We are happy to announce a new USA Wrestling Club (Spartan Wrestling Club) being introduced this Spring / Summer for our wrestlers to further sharpen their skills! Practices will be on Mondays and Wednesdays from 6:30 – 8 pm. Our 1st Practice will be this upcoming Monday, April 21, from 6:30 – 8 pm.
Detailed Information and Club Application HERE
Former Burnt Hills Wrestling standout, John Acors, will be heading up this wrestling club along with Ryan Fitzgerald (Modified Coach), and myself. John is a 2010 Burnt Hills graduate, who would like to “give back” to our program. John was a Section 2 Champion at 215 lbs. during his senior year. John is also well versed in all wrestling styles, as he was a 4x All-American in Freestyle, and Greco Roman in high school.
The club’s focus is to provide individualized instruction with a local, low cost program that our kids can gain valuable experience to help them succeed on the mat. We will be focusing on all three styles of wrestling including: Freestyle, Greco Roman, and Folkstyle.
We hope that your family can take advantage of this great opportunity. All are welcome!!

CONGRATULATIONS SPARTANS ON AN AWESOME SEASON!!
SUBURBAN COUNCIL TRI-CHAMPIONS
D1 – CLASS 2 CHAMPIONS
D1 – SECTION 2 CHAMPIONS – OVERALL
NYS CHAMPIONSHIPS AT THE TIMES UNION CENTER, Albany, NY –
Three Spartans went on to compete at the NYS Championships. Christian Gramuglia (99 lbs.), Joey Butler (145 lbs.), and Jake Ashcraft (170 lbs.) all won their first Section 2 Championship titles, and earned their ticket to the State Tournament.
At the opening ceremonies, Joey Butler was elected as the flag bearer for Section 2. Joey was selected by Section 2 coaches along with Luis Weierbach of Hoosick Falls, as the Sportsmanship winners for their respective divisions in Section 2. These individuals are not just great competitors, but most importantly have displayed great character, and sportsmanship throughout their careers.
In the first round of states, all three Spartans won.
Christian Gramuglia was the first to wrestle and win on the new Coach Blatnick Memorial Mat, he defeated Dylan Arena (Clarence–Sec. 6), 9 – 6, to avenge a mid-season loss at the U-E Duals.
Joey Butler wore down Steven Kim (Benjamin Cardozo–PSAL), and pinned him in third period at 5:43.
Jake Ashcraft completed the first round hat trick by pinning his opponent, Richie Jones (St. Joseph’s Collegiate–C) in 4:46.
In the quarter-final round, Joey advanced to the semi-finals with a hard fought victory over Trevor Hoffmeier (Newark Valley–4). Joey got caught on his back early in the match, but fought off valiantly to secure the 6 – 3 comeback. Christian, and Jake both battled hard, but came up just short of a semi-final berth.
In the semi-finals on Saturday morning, Joey lost a hard fought match to the number one seed, Vincent Deprez (Hilton–5). Deprez would later go on to win the state tournament on Saturday night.
In the wrestle-backs, Jake handed Sonny McPhereson (Indian River-3), an 8 – 3 loss. Jake controlled the match, and scored a couple very nice takedowns to advance to the next round.
Christian came up short against his last opponent, but had an excellent season capped off by his first trip to states. Christian became the first freshman wrestler from Burnt Hills to compete at the NYS Championships, while finishing with a 42 – 8 record. Christian, also overtakes fellow Spartan grapplers (Jake & Joey) on the Burnt Hills All-time wins list for 9th graders. Being only a freshman, we’re very excited about his next three years.
In the third round of wrestle-backs, Jake lost a heartbreaker to eventual 5th place winner, Joe Russo (Rocky Point-11). Nevertheless, Jake finishes an outstanding junior season going 46 – 5 with 32 pins. Jake climbs to third on the Burnt Hills All-Time Wins list with 169 wins, only behind Matt Kaylor (’07 graduate), and fellow captain, Joey Butler. Jake is also second on the All-Time Pins list with 102 career pins. Jake trains year round, and is a great example of hard work, and commitment to the sport. It will be no surprise if Jake comes back even hungrier to finish his senior season on top of the podium.
Rounding off the group, Joey completes his second All-State finish, earning the bronze medal on Saturday for the second consecutive season.
Joey wrestled Ben Ettlinger (Fox Lane-1) in the consi-semis, controlling the match to win by fall at 3:55. Joey pinned Ettlinger in his trademark cradle in the third period.
In the Bronze medal match, Trevor Hoffmeier (Newark Valley-4) and Joey had a re-match of the quarterfinal. Coincidentally, the match was contested on Mat #6, the Coach Blatnick Memorial Mat. This time Joey set the pace of the match, and shut down his tough opponent from Section 4. Joey took Hoffmeier down in the first period, scored a reversal in the second, and another takedown in the third period to secure the win. Joey came off the mat victorious in his last match for the Spartans, beating Hoffmeier 6 – 0. Joey earns the bronze medal for the second year in a row.
Joey has had a tremendous career finishing with 231 career wins, and 150 career pins over a six year period. Joey set another BH record this year with 52 wins in a single season. To top it off, Joey finishes as the all-time career wins and pins leader in the history of Burnt Hills Wrestling. There are a lot of wrestling greats up on the charts in the storied Burnt Hills Wrestling room, and Joey is just glad to have his name among them.
The Spartan Wrestling Team wins their first Section 2 Championship in twenty-five years. The last time the Spartans won the Section was in 1989.
