BH-BL CLASS OF 2011
HALL OF FAME BIOGRAPHIES

Individual

Jon Cardi (Class of 1983, Wrestling) grew up in Charlton, and learned at a young age that hard work and determination delivered results. His wrestling career began as a fifth grader in Pashley Elementary, when his father, Art, began taking him and a few or his boyhood friends to local wrestling club practices and tournaments.

Though Jon loved football, he excelled in wrestling and joined the varsity line-up as an 8th grader.Over his five years representing BH-BL, under the tutelage of Coach Tim Koch, he amassed a record of 144 wins and only six losses, going undefeated from his sophomore through senior years.A five-time Section 2 finalist, Jon won the New York State Tournament three times, and in his junior year was voted “Champion of Champions” by the New York State sports writers and coaches. He is also a two-time DeMeo Award winner, honoring Section 2’s best wrestler. In 1982, Jon also won the Albany Area Chamber of Commerce Scholastic Male Athlete of the Year Award.

His career continued as a scholarship athlete at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, where he was successful both on and off the mat, winning the Atlantic Coast Conference Championship and being named an ACC Academic All-American.While at Carolina, Jon represented the United States at the Junior World Greco Roman Championships in Sweden and won the 74 kg class. With many years and countless hours invested in the sport, the apex of his wrestling career was in the 1988 Olympic Trials, where he knocked off the reigning National Champion on his way to an alternate position on the Olympic Team.Jon returned to North Carolina to graduate college, with a double major in Economics and Industrial Relations.

Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake, Cazenovia share 2011 championship

(July 6, 2011) — No one was able to knock two-time defending champion Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake from the top perch, but the Spartans have company in the No. 1 position. For the first time, the New York State Sportswriters Association All-Sport Championship recognizing the top athletic programs in the NYSPHSAA has ended in a tie for overall honors. Burnt Hills and Cazenovia each finished with 62.5 points in the combined scoring for boys and girls. They narrowly held off Garden City (62.17 points) in the competition, which we have renamed as the Kerr Cup All-Sport Championship in honor of longtime NYSSWA editor and treasurer Neil Kerr. The combined-scoring class champions for the 2010-11 school year are Baldwinsville (AA), Burnt Hills (A), Cazenovia (B), Friends Academy (C) and Chazy (D). It’s the third straight class championship for Burnt Hills; the other four schools are first-time champions. In boys-only scoring, Victor and McQuaid took advantage of the inaugural NYSPHSAA volleyball championship tournament (previous events had “regional” status) by winning their respective divisions en route to tying for first place in Kerr Cup Class AA. The other winners are Jamesville-DeWitt (A), Cazenovia (B), Tuckahoe (C) and Chazy (D). It’s the third straight championship for J-D and second straight for Chazy. In girls-only scoring, the top honors in the largest classes go to Cicero-North Syracuse (AA), Garden City (A), Bronxville (B) and Haldane (C). John A. Coleman and Remsen share the Class D title. Garden City and Bronxville won their respective classes in 2009, the first year of the competition.

The J-D boys and Garden City girls finished with the highest single-sex scores.

Burnt Hills, which set a record by scoring in nine sports, and Cazenovia easily shattered the combined scoring record of Burnt Hills (49.33) in 2009.
